Q. Do you (the owner) actually work on our floor, or do you send crews or sub-contract the work out?

A. Yes it's true I actually work on  almost every job! Unlike other companies that just send a couple of apprentices over, or just sub the entire job out. We are a family business and have been in business since 1966.  This way here we can assure  your satisfaction and you need not worry about who is in your house.

Q. Is it true hardwood floors are better for allergies and Asthma?

A. Very much so! Check with friends and your doctor. We receive lots of feedback from customers that have us remove their rugs, and they can't believe the difference.

Q. How long does it take to sand and finish my old floors?

A. Most jobs take 3 days from start to finish (3 coats). Then we recommend waiting a couple of days before resuming heavy traffic and replacing furniture.

Q. Is it very dusty? I've heard about this new dustless sander?

A. We take care to put up drop-cloths to contain the dust in the areas in which we are working. Most people find that the dust is not very bad.   "Dustless systems" are not 100% dust free and most company's are charging much more a square foot for using them.

Q. Will I need to move out of my house while this is being done?

A. You don't need to move out of your home. You do need to move your furniture prior to our arrival. Then once we are done, under good drying conditions, you will have access to those areas being worked on (such as connecting hallways and stairs) approx. 4-6 hours after poly is applied.

Q. Do you come in and move my furniture, and where does it go?

A. We do not move your furniture. Moving furniture is the customer's responsibility, due to insurance restrictions  not covering us for injuries or damages sustained while moving furniture.

Q. I have found some black stains under where the rug used to be, and I'm told that the former owner had a pet that used to "go on the rug", will these stains come out?

A. Most pet stains don't completely come out. Some do, but not all. It's difficult to tell until we begin sanding. They all come out at the very least looking lighter and the smell usually comes out. Another option is to replace the damaged boards (this may be very expensive, and the new flooring will not be of the same grade, mill, or color as the existing floor. Age changes wood characteristics.

Q. Do we need to be here when you are working or can the work be done while we are on vacation?

A. That's the ideal time to have this work done. Especially if someone in the house is highly sensitive to the smell of polyurethane, or perhaps someone is allergic to dust. But even if you are staying in your home, we can work out a schedule to fit your needs.

Q. What exactly is "Screening" the floor?

A. Screening is another method of sanding. But unlike sanding, the floors are not brought down to bare wood. Screening is done to prepare already finished floors to accept another coat of finish. Without Screening the finish would just peel off. It's primarily a maintenance procedure.

Q. How do you know if your floor only requires  "Screening"?

A. Screening can be done providing the floors never had wax applied to them. (wax includes pledge, endust,  murphy,s oil soap or any other cleaner other than water or water and vinegar). Also screening will not get any dirt out of the pores of the wood, so if you are down to the bare wood chances are you will need an entire sand and re-finish.
Which is why the screen and re-coating is a great low-cost way to keep your floor looking brand new.

Q. How much does it cost to sand and refinish, and do you charge by the room or square foot?

Q. What's the difference between oil-base and water-base (latex)?

A. Oil-based poly-urethanes contain solvents which can take a little longer to dry. The oil-base, which we believe is more durable and cost effective, provides the more "traditional look". The makers of latex finishes are jumping leaps and bounds in making the product more durable, and we do have a growing number of customers that want the "lighter look" and who want to use it because it's more environmentally safe. So whichever finish suits your needs, we can work with you to maintain your wood floor so that it lasts a lifetime.

Q. My Floors have some gaps in between the boards, mostly in the heating season, is this normal or should I be concerned?

A. Wood flooring expands and contracts with temperature and humidity changes, so therefore it is perfectly normal to experience some shrinking in the dry seasons and perhaps a little cupping in the extremely wet season. (July-Sept).

A. We require a deposit of 50% down prior to the delivery of any materials, and gladly accept Checks, Cash.

Q. What is the best way to care for my wood floors, once they are done?

A. We recommend a light dust mop or broom to get the loose soil up then a going over with a water and vinegar solution, or a wood floor cleaner.
